EATS EVERYTHING INTERVIEW

Ahead of his killer set at the incredibly messy Bugged Out Weekender (a full review will be up soon), we decided to sit down with the brilliant Eats Everything in the hopes of gaining some insight into his world. Also, for those who didn't catch his set this weekend, you can listen to his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix below the interview. Enjoy.

So, tell us a little bit about yourself? Where did it all begin?

It began on May 12th 1980, then I got into dance music in 1992/93 and my love of it grew and grew from there really.

What moment did things start to really pick up for you? You're everywhere at the minute!

Things really picked up for me when Catz n Dogz signed and released my track Entrance Song on their wonderful record label Pets Recordings. Since then, it's just gone from strength to strength.

Out of all of the places you've played, which have been your favorite?

My two favourite gigs of the year have been Audio in Brighton and Fabric in London, both on the first weekend in November. Audio was INSANE!!! People were going mental from the time I started at midnight till the time Claude VonStroke finished at 8am!! Amazing crowd. And Fabric was just awesome to be in THAT dj booth playing to that crowd. Its the stuff dreams are made of! Also my Essential Mix was pretty damn special in my hometown of Bristol, but Bristol is always great so...

In regards to your name – what's been your favourite food on your travels? Any deep-fried kangaroo dicks?

I had this amazing meal when I was in Kazakhstan. The promoter, Nour, took me to the best restaurant in Almaty, which they opened especially for me, and they made me the national Kazakh dish which I forget the name of. It was amazing and it wasn't even on the menu!! Great hospitality and lovely people over there. Can't wait to go back.

Also, we see your logo is similar to the Burger King logo - Burger King or McDonald's? Burger King for the fries surely?

McDonald's breakfast all the way, not really keen on the rest of the food from either tbh. I once caused myself a painful and embarrassing injury when rushing to dry myself to get to McDonald's in time for breakfast. I was drying my hair so vigorously that I trapped a nerve in my neck, which cricked my neck to one side and I had to stand naked till 5:30pm in my house till my dad came round to dress me and take me to a chiropractor! I couldn't move at all or sit down!!

Back to the music! What would you say is your number one release of all time?

Of other peoples it would probably be any one of the Todd Terry Unreleased Projects. Of mine, its a toss up between my Pets and Dirtybird EP's.

Which track of your own are you most happy with?

A new one I have done called Jagged Edge, which is out on Pets in the spring. Technically, musically and sonically its the best thing I have done. It may not be as obvious an impact record as Entrance Song or The Size but it is my favourite for sure.

How did the Dirtybird Link Up occur? Everything they touch turns to gold!

The Dirtybird link happened through a number of factors, meeting J Phlip in Bristol, Pets releasing Entrance Song and Claude VonStroke hearing Justin play The Size at Movement in Detroit.

We saw on VonStroke's twitter that you & him have got some bits coming out 2012 as a part of a massive project, with 12 DB Artists!! Can we be cheeky and ask about that?

Me and Claude have just finished a collaboration which will be released February on the dirtybird 7 year anniversary EP. Its called Ignorance Is Bliss and its very different to what either of us do. Its really cool though, I am super happy with it.

A fan has asked if we'll ever see a release of your remix of Adam F – Circles Rework ?

I hope so, I really hope so but its out of my hands. There may or may not be talks going on about releasing it but if it doesn't get a release then I won't be giving it away out of respect for Adam F and the original.

RIOTOUS ROCKERS INTERVIEW

Seeing as it's not all that long now (February 3rd @ The Drop) until GETDOWNORDIE #3 takes place, we thought it'd be a good idea to sit down with the chaps who'll be delivering the vibes - Riotous Rockers.

Before anything else, could you give our readers a bit of insight into the history of Riotous Rockers? How/when did you meet?

RR: We met on the dance-floor at Fabric in 2003, we think it was a Wall of Sound night.

Have either of you ever ventured into production or have you only ever focused on DJing?

Pete: I have meddled in the past, but recently it’s been about the DJing and promoting our night ASBO – it’s still something I’d be up for, but it’d have to be for the right reasons – certainly not into just putting something out there in the name of self-promotion.

Boggy: I put the Benny Hill theme onto the end of Skreams La Roux remix once, I told Annie Mac but she didn't seem too interested.

In your years of experience, are there any clubs that our readers should try to avoid? Likewise with DJs, has anyone ever given you strife?

Pete: We’ve met loads of wallies along the way but thankfully they’ve been outnumbered by the really great people doing this for the love of music.

Boggy: The only time I ever wanted to 'do one' before I played was an indie night at the Barfly in Liverpool, maximum fear. People queueing up to look through my record bag, 'got any razorlight' that sort of thing. Steve Bug made us wait quite a while in an airport once as well!

Has there ever been a time when you've really fucked up during a set or had any embarrassing occurrences on tour?

Pete: If I don’t fuck up during a set then I feel I’ve not done my job properly!

Boggy: I took off a record and threw up on it at the Legion on Old Street once. Playing the same record twice during a set is sort of a speciality for me.

Would you ever consider using a premixed CD? And what do you think of the DJs that are using them in their shows?

Pete: Do people do that?! Why?!?

Boggy: In the 17 years I've been djing I think 2 sets have been prepared track by track (not pre-mixed!) in some order. If your going to a club and having an exact idea of what your playing then obviously you're not reading the crowd.

Are there any artists/DJs you think our readers should be looking out for in 2012?

THE BEST OF 2011 CHART

Here it is folks. The rundown of our top twenty tunes of the year. You may feel that this list is missing one or two tracks and we wholeheartedly agree with you. There were so many amazing releases this year, we could've gone on and on and on. Sadly, we just haven't got the time or energy to list hundreds of tracks just so that everyone gets a mention.

Our number one track just had to be the beautiful 'Tobago' by newbie Jonas Rathsman. Everything about it just screams 'perfection'. Feel free to check the equally beautiful video for the track below the chart.

SCARLETT AND THE PIXELS / SEA OF LCD

We have a lot of friends. Some of them love dance music, some of them don't. Some of them dabble in production, some of them don't. The friend in question however, keeps pumping track after track out of her London studio with no intention of stopping. Scarlett Etienne has taken on a new project (Scarlett and the Pixels) which moves away from her pop roots and drunkenly stumbles in a pair of stilettos towards her love of techno.

This latest EP covers a range of electronic genres thanks to it's stellar cast of remixers. The track list consists of two brilliant original works from Scarlett followed by remixes from Daniel Avery (STOPMAKINGME), Etnik, Lemmy Asthon and Scarlett Etienne herself. The Etnik remix has already received a LOT of attention online and it's only a matter of time until the other mixes do too.

Crookers' last album offering 'Tons of Friends' was poor. Very poor. It was so poor that I don't want to ever have to listen to or talk about it ever again. Their latest attempt is rather good though. Ignoring the now rather annoying 'Bust 'Em Up', the other tracks are all pretty decent.

One of the tracks that really got me hooked on electronic music was 'Meet Your Replacement' by Lies in Disguise aka. you and Blake Miller. Will you two be getting back together at some point and pumping out more bangers?

Who knows what the future might hold but for now, we are both very focused on other projects. That said we have a good relationship so it's definitely not out of the question.

I for one, have always wanted to experience what you do live. Is there any chance of you visiting the UK sometime this decade?

I would love to make it back to the UK. I haven't played over there in quite some time. For some reason when ever I make my trips to Europe it just never ends up working out for me to make the hop over to the UK but hopefully we will get that worked out in the near future!

'Awake' was yet another dance floor destroying electro monster, can we expect more tracks like this anytime soon? A new EP or maybe even an album?

Yes, I've been working on a release of all new original tracks that is getting pretty close to being ready for release. aside from that I also have several gnarly remixes getting ready to drop, Including a remix that I have done for John Lord Fonda's track 'Sound of a Melody' dropping on Vitalic's label Citizen Records, A remix for Kaskade's next song 'Turn It Down' which will be coming out on Ultra Records as well as a Remix for a song called 'Roulette' by a duo called Split & Jaxta that I am putting out on my record label Always Never Records. Aside from that I also have the Awake Remixes release dropping at the end of this month on Always Never which will feature various remixes of my single 'Awake' by Evol Intent, South Central, J.Rabbit, and Freefire.

Have you got any 'whatever happens on tour, stays on tour' stories? Care to break the code of 'stays on tour' and share a few of them with us?

Never break the code...thats rule number one.

Out of all of the people you've met during your career, both DJs and producers, who parties the hardest and who passes out before the night's even begun?

Man, I just did a month long festival tour in the US called Identity Festival with a whole slue of artist and i have to say that as far partying goes my homie Datsik took the cake. I shared a tour bus with him and lets just say if I were willing to break the code you mentioned in the last question, well he definitely provided me with a few stories to tell haha. I also want to give an honorable mention to Ken and Scott from The Crystal Method you know those guys have been in the game for a while now, since like at least the mid 90's but they definitely went in on the partying way harder than a lot of the newer younger guys on the tour for sure! It's actually kind of funny because a lot of the big name acts that people would typically perceive as being big crazy partiers end up actually being really low key mild mannered people for the most part when they are off stage and not performing.

What do you like to do when you're not 'in the studio' or on tour? Before you answer, you are NOT allowed to say SLEEP.

First off i'm a hustler...I never sleep. Second I almost never have down time from both touring and the studio it's usually one or the other but when i do find some free time i usually keep it low key i'm a big cinema fan so i usually try to catch a movie in the theatre or on Netflix...i'm addicted to Netflix online.

And finally, as a signoff, who are your top three up and coming artists/DJs to watch in 2012?

Freefire, Split & Jaxta and South Central.

Today is a sad day for the music world. One of it's most talented stars has passed away. Mehdi Favéris-Essadi better known as DJ Mehdi to you and me, has been confirmed dead at age 34. He made friends wherever he went, he made incredible music whenever he was in the studio and most importantly, he made all of us dance.

There has been a huge response to the news of his death all over the internet. Twitter in particular has been flooded with R.I.P. messages and peoples memories of when they first met the man. Details of how he died are still rather sketchy but one thing we can say for certain, from all of us here at GETDOWNORDIE, he will be missed on many a dance floor.

R.I.P. DJ Mehdi.

When Stephen Fasano left Aeroplane, he took on a new persona. The Magician. In my opinion, it was the right move. For the past year or so, Stephen has been providing us with some rather lovely disco treats. His remixes of Lyke Li's 'I Follow Rivers' and Beni's 'It's a Bubble' have been on heavy repeat in quite a few clubs worldwide. Kitsuné recently released his collaborative EP with Peter (Yuksek) which featured the now legendary synth pop track 'Twist'.

Finally, after a long wait, Mr Fasano has finished his first solo EP. What does your average day consist of? What do you do to relax when you're not pumping out techno to crowds of sweaty club goers?

C: Not a lot, I play World of Warcraft.
L: Not much really. I like to cycle around.

When you're both 'in the studio', do you ever clash when it comes to what direction you should take a track or are you both pretty much in sync?

We don't have a 'studio' so we can't make much music together so we tend to just make music separately. We have pretty similar tastes so it seems to work.

How did it feel to be 'championed' by Fake Blood (when he started playing your material in his sets)? Did you cry tears of joy whilst holding each other?

It was really cool but weird at the same time because we had still never played them out.

Do either of you ever get drunken clubgoers asking if they can 'come back to your hotel room'? If so, how do you go about repelling them?

We have a friend called Asher who we always have to look after, he's a real pain.

Do you have any idea how many hats Tiga actually owns? He seems to be wearing a different cap every time he plays a set.

One. He sketches a new design on to it before every show.

Before Clouds was born, did either of you attempt any solo productions? Were you always called Clouds?

No, not really, we started making music when I asked Calum 'Do you want to start making music?'. We weren't always called Clouds.

Are there any artists that you think are giving techno/dance music in general a bad name?

Ado. He always punches girls when he's djing. Sicko lol.

Do you have a set in stone track list for your sets or do you just wing it on the day?

Freestyle baby.

Any comments on the recent Steve Angello 'Premixed mix CD' scenario?

Nobody going to his shows gives a fuck if he's djing or not. He's a business man and business is booming.

You both hail from Perth which is quite a small town, how did you both entertain yourselves in your younger years?

Organised crime.

Any chance of a debut album anytime soon?

Yes.

For the past couple of years, there's been one DJ duo who I've desperately wanted to get involved with. Hailing from Amsterdam, Henzel & Disco Nova are two rising stars that you need to keep an eye on. With a ton of remixes under their belts for the likes of Cassius, TAI and The Partysquad plus a couple of original tracks too, the duo are well established producers. However, where they REALLY come into their own, is behind the wheels of steel. Brilliant DJs that can drive the fans crazy with track after track of crowd pleasers. Chile's Frankie Barretso needs no introduction on this blog. If you've been a long time reader, you'll know that he's one of our favorite producers in the game. One of his latest tracks - the beautiful 'Celeste' - has just been remixed by another of our favorite producers, Australia's Redial (Frankie and Redial are both signed to Tuffem Up! Records).

The latest EP from French producers BeatauCue - Falcon Punch - is a brilliant combination of electronic music and incredible art. The EP itself is one of the best releases from the duo to date. It seems they're really trying to push the French sound whilst still keeping that unique sound they've managed to create over the past few years. The beautiful cover art was created by one of my favorite designers, the incredible McBess. Whilst I do think the artwork is more suited to a band, it's the icing on the cake that is this release. I love cake.

I have no idea how I missed these. David Morris aka. Boy 8-Bit has been releasing free tracks from his upcoming 'Madrigal' EP for the past two or three weeks and each one has been just as good as the last.
